 Introductory Speaker

Dave DurenbergerDavid Durenberger, J.D.   
David Durenberger served as Senior United States Senator for Minnesota from 1978 to 1995. He serves now as Chairman of the National Institute of Health Policy (NIHP), a program of the University of St. Thomas. Senator Durenberger gained national health policy leadership as a 16-year member of the Senate Finance Committee plus six years as Health Subcommittee Chair. He served eight years on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and 12 years on the Environment Committee. Today, he influences the future of the nation's two major public health programs as a member of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) and of the Kaiser Foundation Commission on the Future of Medicaid and the Uninsured. Senator Durenberger was recently named by Governor Tim Pawlenty to lead the Minnesota Citizens Forum on Health Care Costs, an inside-out approach to health care reform in Minnesota. He is Chair of Citizens for Long Term Care, whose goal is financing policy reform, and President of the Medical Technology Leadership Forum. With former Senate colleague Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Durenberger co-chairs America's Health Together. He also is a board member at the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA). He is author of Prescription for Change and Neither Madman Nor Messiahs and teaches and speaks nationally on the future of health care delivery and policy.

Forrest BurkeForrest Burke, J.D.   
Forrest Burke is president of Public Sector, Labor & Trust of UnitedHealthcare. Previously, Forrest was general counsel of UnitedHealthcare from January 2005 to March 2008. Prior to UnitedHealth Group, Forrest worked for Dorsey & Whitney LLP where he was a partner, member of the firm’s Management Committee, and chair of the Health Practices Group. Forrest joined the firm in 1987 after receiving his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He was judicial clerk to the Honorable Jay C. Waldman in the United States District Court for the District of Pennsylvania. In addition to his law degree, Forrest received his B.A. in English from Colgate University in New York.

Jim ColemanJim Coleman, M.B.A.   
Jim Coleman currently serves as chief operations officer of the Marshfield Clinic, a multi-specialty group practice with over 770 physicians providing services in 45 locations throughout central, northern and western Wisconsin. The Marshfield Clinic provides primary, secondary and tertiary care encompassing 84 different medical specialties. Jim has overall administrative responsibility for operational planning and performance of the clinic's comprehensive system of care, and has served in this capacity for the past nine years. Prior to serving as chief operations officer, Jim was director of Security Health Plan for Marshfield Clinic's Health Maintenance Organization. He was responsible for the administration of this nearly 150,000 member HMO including strategic planning, financial performance, marketing/enrollment, and member/staff satisfaction. While serving as director of Security Health Plan, Jim also served for two years as president of the Association of Wisconsin Health Plans. Jim's educational background includes a MBA from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, and a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist Designation from the Wharton School of Business.

Mark EustisMark Eustis, M.H.A.   
Mark Eustis is currently president and chief executive officer of Fairview Health Services. His previous experience includes working for Ascension Health in St. Louis, MO as president of Regional Ministry Operations. In that role, he provided strategic leadership and operational oversight for the largest regional health ministries within Ascension Health. Prior to this position, he served as president of Ascension Health's Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic States Operating Group. Mark's health care career also includes leadership roles at the Detroit Medical Center and St. John’s Health in Detroit, MI. Eustis served as an adjunct faculty member in the health administration graduate program at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. He has served on the board of the American Heart Association, Missouri Baptist Healthcare Foundation and Mid-America Transplant Services. Additionally, he was the Health Services Division Chair for the United Way of Greater St. Louis in 1998 and 1999. Mark serves on the Board of the Minnesota Hospital Association. He holds a Bachelor's degree in business administration and a Master's degree in hospital and health care administration, both from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.

Stuart GutermanStuart Guterman, M.A.   
Stuart Guterman is an assistant vice president of the Commonwealth Fund and director for the Fund's Program on Medicare's Future, based in Washington, DC. He is responsible for the Fund's research agenda on Medicare issues and Medicare's role in achieving a high performance health system, and analyses related to the current performance and future improvements in the Medicare program and the health system overall. Mr. Guterman was director of the Office of Research, Development, and Information at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services from 2002 to 2005. Prior to that, he was a senior analyst at the Congressional Budget Office, a principal research associate in the health policy center at the Urban Institute, and deputy director of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (and its predecessor, the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission) from 1988 through 1999. Mr. Guterman received an A.B. in economics from Rutgers University and an M.A. in Economics from Brown University, and did additional graduate work at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Michael Rock, M.D.   
Michael Rock, M.D., is chief medical officer and medical director of the Mayo Hospitals in Rochester, MN. In addition to his leadership roles with Mayo Rochester Hospitals, he serves as chair of the hospitals' Financial Analysis and Performance Committee, is a participating member of the Management Oversight Group or Operational Arm of the Executive Board, a member of the Finance Committee, and serves as vice-chair for the Clinical Practice Committee. He is an active member of Mayo's National Policy Board aiming to increase dialogue among national stakeholders to improve the health care delivery in the U.S. Dr. Rock has also recently been named the 2008 chair of the American Hospital Association (AHA) Section for Health Care Systems. Dr. Rock received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Western Ontario. He assumed his post-graduate fellowship training in surgical oncology at The Rizzoli Institute in Bologna, Italy and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Dr. Rock is currently a professor of surgery at Mayo Clinic in addition to his administrative roles.

Jeff Schiff, M.D., M.B.A.   
Jeff Schiff is the medical director for Minnesota Health Care Programs, Medicaid, General Assistance Medical Care, our SCHIP program, MinnesotaCare and the Division Director for the Health Services Medical Management Division at the Minnesota Department of Human Services. His work focuses on the development and implementation of evidence-based benefit policy for the public programs and the advancement of improved care delivery models. Dr. Schiff has recently served as president of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is active on the state leadership team for the Minnesota’s MCHB President’s New Freedom Initiative Integrated Services Grant including the state’s pediatric medical home initiative. His past administrative experience includes medical direction for Minnesota’s Emergency Medical Services for Children program. He practices clinically in pediatric emergency medicine. Dr. Schiff recently completed an MBA in health care administration at the University of St. Thomas.

Konrad (Kit) Friedemann, J.D.   
Kit Friedemann helped establish Fredrikson & Byron’s Health Law Practice Group and is also a member of the Health Care Fraud and Compliance Group. He represents a wide variety of health care clients, ranging from hospitals and physician groups to HMOs. He has extensive experience in corporate work, joint ventures, regulatory compliance and investigations, and contracting (including managed care contracting). Kit has been recognized by his peers as one of the best health care lawyers in the country, ever since the national directory BEST LAWYERS IN AMERICA began recognizing health law as a separate category in 1991. Kit chaired the firm’s Health Law Group for 10 years. Kit also serves on Fredrikson & Byron’s Board of Directors. Kit earned his B.A. in history from Wesleyan University and has a J.D. from the University of Michigan.

Greg Hart, M.H.A.   
Greg Hart is a principal at LarsonAllen and serves as the firm’s leader of the health care consulting practice. Greg’s consulting practice focuses largely on strategic planning/positioning of health care organizations, health care mergers, acquisitions and affiliations, and strategic capital planning. His background includes over twenty-five years of health care leadership and management experience. Before joining LarsonAllen in 1995, he served as the CEO (and COO) of the University of Minnesota Health System, an academic medical center in one of the most highly competitive health care markets in the country. Greg received his MHA degree from the University of Minnesota, and teaches extensively in the University of Minnesota MHA Program as well as in several health care graduate school programs at the University of St. Thomas. He has served on numerous health care governing boards, including the Minnesota Hospital Association, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, and the University Health System Consortium (UHC).

Mark Landreville   
Mark Landreville joined Piper Jaffray in 2005 as managing director in the Public Finance Group. His area of focus is senior living clients, including skilled nursing, assisted living, senior housing, congregate housing, and continuing care retirement communities. Prior to joining Piper Jaffray, Mr. Landreville was a principal and the manager of public finance for a regional investment banking company. During the past five years he completed transactions as investment banker or advisor with a total dollar value in excess of $600,000,000. Mr. Landreville has served on the AASHA business partners advisory board, the Aspen Medical Group board of directors, the Mounds Park Academy board of trustees, and is a past president of the Minnesota Institute of Public Finance. Mr. Landreville has a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a concentration in economics from St. Johns University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Jack Militello, Ph.D.   
Jack Militello is a Professor of Management at the University of St. Thomas. He has 25 years of experience in teaching, research, and consulting on issues related to strategic planning and executive leadership. He currently sits on the boards of directors of four firms. Jack's academic research focuses on the strategic alignment of the firm's external brand with its know-how and values. He has published in a number of academic and practitioner-focused journals and has presented his research at national and international conferences. His consulting has centered on strategic planning, change management, leadership development, and strategic alignment. He has worked with both large and smaller organizations from the business, nonprofit, and government sectors. His clients have included IBM, ReMax, Du Pont, The National Catholic Education Association, The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Minnesota State Bar Association, City of Philadelphia, State of Tennessee, and the United States Department of Justice. Jack holds a Ph.D. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Steven Proeschel, M.P.A.   
Steven Proeschel is managing director in the investment banking group of Piper Jaffray and director of the national health care group. For 17 years, he has worked exclusively in health care finance. Mr. Proeschel has worked with the full range of health care providers including health care systems and physicians’ clinics. He has completed over 100 financings as senior banker throughout the United States. Proeschel has advised some of the region’s largest health care systems on mergers, acquisitions and strategic capital plans. He is fully conversant in a broad array of financing structures including variable rate debt, auction rate securities and interest rate caps, swaps and hedging vehicles. He is also a frequent lecturer on health care finance issues. Prior to joining Piper Jaffray, Proeschel was an assistant to the mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota, where he represented the City of St. Paul before the Minnesota Legislature and United States Congress and served as chief aide on a national commission recommending public finance reforms to Congress. Proeschel has a Master of Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and was a summa cum laude graduate of Hamline University with a degree in political science.

Nancy Rehkamp, M.P.A.   
Nancy Rehkamp, principal at LarsonAllen, specializes in market strategy and program and operational planning for acute and post acute health care organizations. Her knowledge and experience within these disciplines and provider organizations provides clients with an integrative perspective to health care planning issues and opportunities. Nancy has 25 years of health care experience, including long-term care operations, acute care hospital administration, rehabilitation services, and home care and hospice management. Her expertise is in the areas of acute care and post acute care strategic planning, program development, operations and analysis. From 1979 to 1997, Nancy held several senior management positions in Allina Health System, a large, integrated health care delivery system in Minnesota. Nancy earned a Masters in public administration from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and business from the University of Kansas. She is a frequent speaker to state hospital and senior living associations.

David Schuh   
David Schuh is a principal at LarsonAllen specializing in strategic financial and capital planning services. David has extensive experience in public accounting and business consulting devoted almost exclusively to the health care industry. He has varied experience in health care financial management issues, particularly strategic financial and capital consulting. David has provided leadership and direction to organizations in the area of strategic financial and capital planning. He has completed numerous financial and capital allocation plans for organizations ranging from small rural hospitals to large multi-state health care systems. David is a certified public accountant and a member of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts, and the Iowa Health Care Financial Management Association. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration (Magna Cum Laude) from Northern State University.

Steve ShieldsSteve Shields
Steve Shields is the president and CEO of Manhattan Retirement Foundation, Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan, KS. Shields is a sought-after international consultant, keynote speaker, and workshop education presenter on leadership and transformation in long-term care. He has been Meadowlark's President since 1994. Shields is an international leader in the creation of the “Household Model” and provides consulting and education to providers on the model and its application.  Participants from over 40 states and 10 foreign countries have utilized this experience to further deepen their culture change journeys. Shields has directly influenced national policy in long term care and worked with the Department of Health and Human Services to advance the change in national regulation to culture change in long term care across America. He is now actively working with foreign governments to shape their national policy in long term care. Steve serves on the advisory board of Kansas State University’s Center on Aging, where he is also a faculty member. Steve is a graduate of Kansas State University.

Dave SpaldingDave Spalding
Dave Spalding is the president and CEO of SelectAccount, a wholly-owned medical banking subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. A former investment banker and corporate finance executive with Bank of America, for the past two-and-a-half years he has led the SelectAccount team in building a CDH-oriented spending account custodian/administrator  with more than $100 million in medical savings deposits and investments. Dave is also the vice president of medical banking for the Minnesota Blues, where his accountability is to provide a highly integrated, consumer-centric banking solution for the Minnesota Blue Plan’s consumers and employer clients. Additionally, Dave currently serves on the board of directors of the Bluestone Federal Credit Union and Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES). CLUES is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for the Minnesota Latino community, by providing critical behavioral, health and social services.

Frederick (Fritz) Wenzel, M.B.A., F.A.C.M.P.E.   
Fritz Wenzel is an assistant professor of management at the University of St. Thomas where he specializes in research on health care leadership and management, governance in health care organizations, managed care and health insurance, distance learning, core competencies in health care leaders, and physician leadership. He was executive director of the Marshfield Clinic Medical Research Foundation for 16 years and executive director of the Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, WI, for 17 years. He was executive vice president and CEO of the Medical Group Management Association in Englewood, CO for three years. He provides consulting services to medical groups and hospital systems and has authored a number of papers and two books on medical and leadership topics. Fritz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and a MBA from the University of Chicago.

Joe White, M.B.A.   
Joe White, a principal at LarsonAllen, specializes in serving physician groups and health care systems. He has over 20 years of experience in consulting, tax and assurance services in the health care field. He is also on faculty at the University of St. Thomas teaching in the Physician Leadership College and the Mini-MBA in Health Care Management. Since 1982, Joe has been providing strategic and financial consulting, public accounting and reimbursement consultation for physician groups and health care organizations. He currently serves as the firm’s national leader of services to physician organizations and services for physician practices. Joe has experience in strategic planning, performing feasibility studies, overseeing performance improvement, implementing system redesign, and other organizational change for physician practices with revenues ranging from start up practices to $1 billion. Joe graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor's degree in accounting and has a MBA from the University of St. Thomas.
